Organ pipes

Getting ready to remove these pipes to make room for the blower work

Sunday, October 26, 2008

Well, I'm back in NY safe and sound. It's late and I'm tired so I'll
fill you in on all the details later. I'm sorry I didn't post more
while I was away, but we were so busy and our 'net connection was so
slow and flaky it was really difficult. I'll try and put together a
Flikr page with lots of pictures (I took lots) and details or
something in the next couple of days and link to it here. Anyway- job
done, glad I went, but very glad to be home! Goodnight.

Well, here it is 7:30pm and I'm sitting right were I've been most of
the day- between the server and the single gateway computer that we've
managed to do a clean re-install on.

We hope to be able to use the image from this (and a similar one from
one of the Compaq machines) to push out from the server to all the
machines in the lab. I'm just waiting at the moment for Scott from
Cloud9 in White Plains (who has been fantastic!) to do a little
configuring on the server so we can go to the next stage- the wonders
of modern science that he can work on the server from there!

We had hoped that as the road was now open we would be able to drive
back to Port au Prince tomorrow so we could see some of the country,
but the way things are looking we'll probably need all of tomorrow
tofinish up- so it looks like we'll be flying back to PaP on Sunday as
originally planned.

David is outside at the party he is sponsoring for the students here
tonight- it was supposed to be our celebration of our task being
finished- oh well ;) I hope that once Scott gets his stuff finished we
can at least get all the Gateways finished up tonight- that will just
leave the dozen or so Compaqs and the fine tuning to do tomorrow- but
it looks like another late night. The music outside is good and loud,
and with all the Coke I've drunk today I don't think there's any
chance of me nodding off!

Ah, Scott looks ready for me- if there's a break later I'll try and
throw up a couple more pictures- TTFN :)

Well, today's another day. We were here 'til midnight last night
trying to get the computers here cleaned up. They are mostly either
Gateways or Compaqs and all but 4 are so virus and malware ridden that
they can't get online and the only thing we can do is try and get one
of each type cleaned up and then clone them onto the others. Fingers
crossed it will work!

More later :)

Lunch in the conference room amongst the mess from the cabling etc.
(John Vrooman, David Bullock & Pere Ajax).

The server is now in it's new home :)

Our plane at Cayes airport

Well I'm here in Cayes!

Ariived yesterday with the server intact and no problems, had a quick
tour of the BTI (business school) and then dinner (goat) at La Cayenne
Hotel and bed- basic but clean.

Today we're recabling modems and routers etc. to get the server into
the room where we want it to be in- I've booted it now in a different
room just to make sure it works (I'm typing this on it). Then we'll
start setting up the server environment and start cleaning up the
computers here.

Will try and post more (with pictures) when we have the connection
more securely set up.

All packed and ready to go ...

... To Haiti. The server is the big, canvas-wrapped box in front, the rest of the bags are it's support gear. Let's hope they let us on with it as cabin-baggage otherwise we'll have to buy it a seat!

I'll hopefully have internet acess once we have the server installed, so I'll try and post some pictures from there once we arrive.

the Twins are here!

My birthday has been seriously upstaged :)

Robyn had a C-Section on Saturday at 5:48pm (while CJ and I were at the
Scout Camp), Jackie had been with her since earlier that morning. So I'm
very pleased to present Jacob (in the picture with Robyn- weighing in at
3 lb 11 oz) and Luke (4 lb 2 oz).

All are doing well at the moment so keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
