After the trick or treating

Pizza, candy and America's Funniest Home Videos- what more does a 10 year old need?

Trick or treat?

Out trick or treating with Crispy and his pals Thomas and Jason.

Almost perfect dog walk!

Today was an almost perfect fall afternoon for a dog walk. And as I had my Pentax with me to add a picture to my other blog (which you can also read about here), I thought I'd post few pictures I took-

Brisk and sunny

Holly and friend romping through the fallen leaves

Saxon Woods lower path

Afternoon sunshine

See what I mean?

At Crispy's SCUBA class- I had to grab a pic before the lesson, because once they start all there is to see is an empty pool as they're all under water!

More pipecleaners

I had meant to post this before- these are Crispy's dragon and helicopter rendered in pipecleaner!

Happy Hallowe'en!

Well, tomorrow.

Crispy's been displaying his artistic talents with pipecleaners again.

A New Blog!

If you are a regular reader here you will know that I have a dog, Holly (a short-haired border collie mix), who needs to be walked at least a couple of miles a day. Most days I take her to Saxon Woods in Mamaroneck and we do a loop of between 2 and 4 miles.

I love the walk around Saxon Woods, and I love watching the seasons change. So I decided it would be fun to post a picture of the same spot every day so I could look back at how the seasons change- but on a new blog so I didn't bore everyone who looks at my regular blog to death! The spot I picked is a bridge over a small stream that we cross whichever loop we do, and the blog address is

There will be gaps- sometimes we go to the other section of Saxon Woods, sometimes we go to the beach or further afield, but most days we cross this bridge and I will try and post a picture. And for the fun of it I may add other details, like the weather, or what is playing on my G2 at the moment I took the picture (I have almost 14GB of music on it and I usually just have it playing on full random while I'm walking the dog).

So if you've got nothing better to do, and you feel like looking at the same picture over and over again (with just the weather and the leaves changing) head on over to

Race to Nowhere

Just got back from a screening of the documentary "Race to Nowhere" at the high school- if you are a parent of a kid in school go and find a screening and see it!

"Director Vicki Abeles turns the personal political, igniting a national conversation in her new documentary about the pressures faced by American schoolchildren and their teachers in a system and culture obsessed with the illusion of achievement, competition and the pressure to perform. Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens."

Came home and just wanted to give Crisp a hug (but I didn't wake him up- I'll wait 'til the morning)- I don't think we're putting pressure on him, I think we're doing OK, but we need to be really conscious of what school/culture/peers etc. are doing- it's a really thought provoking movie!

Fall in the woods

This picture really doesn't do it justice, but the woods are so beautiful at this time of year. I just wish I wasn't red/green colourblind so I could get the full effect, but even so it's still pretty cool!

Happy Birthday Jacob & Luke

2 years old tomorrow.

Celebrating in the parish hall as Robyn & David are home but have no gas to cook with.

Scuba class

At the Hommocks pool in Mamaroneck for Crispy's scuba class (that's him with the yellow snorkel).

If only it were true!

Having probably spent more than my fair share of time talking to tech support people who know less than I do,I think this morning's XKCD cartoon is brilliant!

Rye won 21-20 in the last 20 seconds!

Had to leave the game at 1/2 time as Nanny & Crispy had had enough, Jackie needed to be home to see the start of the Yankee game, and I needed to walk the dog (singular- Chico went home last night). I'll post the final score later.

Half-time show by the Harrison Marching Band with medley of Billy Joel tunes.

Another TD for Harrison.

They're up 14-7

Boo! Touchdown and extra point Harrison.

Tied 7-7

Touchdown Rye!

And the extra point is good!

Rye 7-0 Harrison

Harrison's band (background) looks like something out of "The Music Man"; Rye's (foreground) is much more ghetto in black T-shirts and Garnet knitted caps!

Rye-Harrison Football Game

We came early enough to get a seat and see all the pre-game fun :)

Altar flowers

The altar guild did some cool, seasonal flowers for tomorrow.

Today's dog walk

Today walk in Saxon Woods with Holly & Chico, just under 3 miles with lots of ups and downs and Chico seemed to enjoy it (Holly had her usual great time!):

Growing like a weed

We've just spent a hour or so sorting through all Crispy's clothes, only to find that he has grown out of more than half of them (the overflowing bin on the left). Oh well, I guess there's a trip to the mall in our future...

With the in-laws

At Jodi's to celebrate the recently-homeless Robyn's birthday.

They don't know how long they'll be out, but they're in a hotel for the next couple of nights at least. The fire didn't do any damage to their apartment, but the apartment that burned was right above the boiler and all the incoming power for the building so there's no power or heat 'cos of all the water they used to put out the fire.

Saxon Woods

Weirdest thing- we're walking through the woods and we were just passed by a well dressed, older couple going the other way carrying a parrot in a small hamster cage!

Home again

Home safely from the retreat and out with my dog and our surprise guest- Chico is staying with us for a while 'cos there was a fire on one of the lower floors of Robyn & David's building and they've been evacuated for a few days.

Potty break on I87 on the way home.

A last few games of carpetball before we load up and hit the road for home.

Sophie on camera duty.

There's nothing like early morning kickball to beat the morning chill!

CR - Day 2

Early morning steam rising off the lake- it's a bit nippy this morning.

Holly and Beauregard

Holly's teaching him about chasing tennis balls- and she's being very nice and sharing!

Lots of little knobs!

They guys came a couple of days ago to replace the AV equipment that was damaged in the lightning strike over the summer- including the main sound board. Now I have to try and reset all the channels and aux sends and inputs oh my! from my notes in hopes that it will just sound like it used to.

Dog in the stream

With slightly crazy eyes 'cos the flash on my new phone fired!

It's Fire Safety Week so we have the firetrucks in the parking lot to visit the nursery school.

(This is the first picture with my new T-Mobile G2 phone- more on that later).
