Con Ed... grrrrrrrr!

Father Matthew has been without power at the rectory since Saturday and Con Ed said that power would be back by Wednesday!

So this morning I called Greg (our electrician) to see if we could hook up the small generator we have as a backup for the sump pumps in the church boiler room to at least get his boiler running and give him some heat, "no problem".

So, I hauled the generator over behind the rectory, along with gas, extension cords etc., Greg is on his way, and guess what? The power just came back on!

What does the O stand for?...

..."O my God it's early!"

I set my alarm for 0500 so I could head back out with the snowblower, but thankfully it looks like the expected extra inches of snow never materialized. As I'm up I shall head out anyway with my trusty shovel and hopefully get done in time for a cup of coffee and a shower before church.

Wish I had my new power brush- it'd make short work of this....

I shouldn't be posting an entry like this in October!

I've just come in from spending a coupla hours doing a pass around with the snow blower and then another to lay down a light layer of ice-melter. It's gonna drop below freeezing tonight and if I had left the slushy snow that's fallen so far to freeze it would be a nightmare to clear in the morning. And NOAA are saying we could get another 3"-5" overnight!

But it's October...!

A Year in the Woods in 3 minutes :)

Every day I walk my dog Holly in Saxon Woods in Mamaroneck, NY.

To stop boring people on this blog with endless similar pictures or the woods I decided to start a new blog and take a picture of the same spot every day.

Today marks the end of a whole year of taking these pictures, so I've put them together in a little time-lapse move.

So, a year in the woods in 3 minutes- enjoy!

Snowy Woods

I took my weatherproof Pentax camera into the woods when I went out with the dog today. It was an interesting walk as every few minutes there was a crack like a gunshot as a branch somewhere snapped under the weight of the heavy, wet snow on the leaves that are still on many of the trees- only one fell close enough for me to see it go, but I kept a good lookout over my head!

In fact I saw a couple of branches go on Milton Road as I was about to turn in off the Parkway (I stopped and pulled them out of the road), and when I got back to the church I found Jackie out pulling a big branch off the sidewalk outside the parking lot. We've checked the batteries in our flashlights as I really won't be surprised if we lose power tonight (Robyn & David already have).

So, here are some of the pictures from the woods :)

It's crazy to see it like this in October!

It's kind of pretty though

There are going to be a lot of trees down tomorrow!

Holly's having fun anyway :)

I was only away from the car for an hour

This is Mamaroneck Avenue on the way home

It's still October!

This isn't supposed to happen yet!

Yikes- I'd better go and walk the dog before it starts to stick!

Snow!

As the snow starts to fall outside (much earlier than they said it would!), my snowblower is ready. Tires inflated, oil changed, transmission oil topped up, skids and scrapper bar adjusted, fresh gas in the tank, snow chute sprayed with a coating of silicone, and the battery for my noise-canceling headphones is in it's charger!

My cat loves me very much...

Fanwood Haunted House

Jackie (and friend)  at the door of the NYSD Haunted House, I brought CJ and his friend Jason.

Woodland Panorama

The camera software I use with my phone has been upgraded (it's now called Procapture), and it has a nifty new panorama feature.

So here is a little woodland panorama taken from the rock where I take my bridge picture for my other blog every day :)

Snow in the forecast!

We had the first frost last night and had to scrape the windshields of the cars this morning, and they're saying 3-6" of snow on Saturday night (I'll believe it when I see it!).

But as I'm off today I thought I'd spent a few minutes putting the covers on the air-conditioners inside and out so they're all snugged up for the winter :)

Not so close- I hardly know you...

Spotted just now in our parking lot.

Now I know Rye women are skinny, but whoever is driving the Caddy (on
the right, and was there first), is going to have a little trouble
getting in!

It's a tough job...

... but someone has to do it :)

Jacob and fireman's helmet

We're having breakfast with Jacob at the bagel place in town next to the fire house. The fire trucks just pulled out with sirens blaring, much to Jacob's excitement! Then one of the staff at the bagel place, who is a fireman in another town, brought in his helmet for Jacob to see :)

Film crew

We've had another film crew here today, just using the parking lot for parking and a couple of trucks (make up and wardrobe I think). Apparently it's some low budget movie called "The English Teacher" with Nathan Lane in it, but we've not seen anyone recognisable so far. They've been fairly well behaved and the church makes a few bucks... so not all that exciting really ;)

LL Bean outlet

A VERY dangerous place for me to be! But I put back the boots I was looking at and just grabbed a couple of sweat shirts, a raincoat and a new collar and leash for Holly. Jackie got a few things and we got Crisp a great pair of winter boots- in size 10!  I only wear a 10.5 or 11- Bigfoot!

Update- we went on from there to Ikea, mostly so we could have meatballs for lunch, and we got out under $100- that must be a record ;)

Cat love...

... the love that dare not speak it's name!

Film crew at Saxon Woods

I arrived to walk the dog this afternoon to find the whole parking lot has been taken over by a film crew. I didn't mind parking at the bottom of the hill, but it would have been nice if they'd put a sign at the bottom so I didn't have to do a 6-point turn amongst the location trucks at the top when I got up there!

Caroling

For a thousand generations we vowed never to forget how his soldiers feasted on our brother Stephen

I like pie!

Yum :)

Apple Pie!

Making apple pies (mostly without cinnamon) with the apples we picked yesterday :)

A dangerous process as you can tell from Crispy's safety goggles!
