Father Matthew uses a small monkey called Jehoshaphat to help with chapel services (and sometimes with his YouTube videos too). So today the nursery school children were asked to bring bananas for Jehoshaphat instead of the canned and packaged food they usually bring for one of the local food pantries. Jehoshaphat of course realized he couldn't eat them all- so he donated them all to the food pantry :)

Since I've been getting a little more serious about my photography I decided it was time to calibrate the screen on my laptop. This involves putting a device on your screen that measures the colors, brightness and contrast it shows and adjust your display to ensure that what you see is exactly what your camera recorded and what will print.
I found some open source software that runs on Linux (dispcalGUI) and then tracked down a colorimeter (the above-mentioned device that analyses your screen) that works with it nice and cheap on eBay- it's the Spyder2 Express that has been replaced by a newer version but works fine for my needs. It arrived today and I just ran a calibration on my laptop (the picture above).
You can learn more about monitor calibration here, and I am now going to start working on the pictures of chapel I took earlier- we'll see if my newly calibrated screen makes any difference ... of course my red/green colorblindness probably doesn't help ;)
I am doing a short photography class on Thursday evenings on taking low-light pictures. For the next class I am supposed to bring a series of pictures taken in a low-light situation, so, as today is Father Matthew's last children's chapel service and he asked me to take some pictures, I thought I would kill two birds with one stone.
This is my camera/flash setup: with a 1/2 CTO filter on the flash to blend with the incandescent lights (I set the camera to 3800K as there is some daylight coming in through the window behind the altar- I'll tweak the color in post); set to bounce off the angled ceiling; and with a black flag to avoid any direct flash on the subjects. I tried to keep the ISO as low as possible, but to get a decent depth of field I ended up taking most of the pictures at ISO 400, f/5. 6, 1/200 sec, +1 FEC.
I'll let your imaginations run wild on the bananas until I post some of the final pictures later :)

Jake, Crispy and I just got back from a wonderful 6 hours at Spa Castle in Queens with Tami, Auxford, Alexander., William & Ian Burks. It's a huge Korean spa with multiple saunas, indoor and outdoor pools with all sorts of massage jets and awesome Korean food.
We had a wonderful relaxing time; Jackie is now napping in front of the TV, CJ is dozing in his room and I am about to go out for a very gentle walk with the dog.
Thanks to the Burks for sharing it with us- highly recommended!

He's very happy surrounded by, as he puts it, his favourite book (The Hunger Games), TV show (Doctor Who) and comic book (Tintin).

We spent the morning (and some of the afternoon) taking the top bunk off Crispy's bunk bed. We had to go through a huge stack of stuff that was conveniently hidden at the end of the bed (and there's still more to go through), but it makes his room look twice the size :)
