Back in the woods...

... where I have full cell Internet :) We're fine at home, still one of the few places with power (but no internet and very spotty cell phone) so we have Jody and Matthew sleeping at our place and everyone else shows up during the day to charge cell phones and hang out. Crisp hangs out in the Undercroft with various of his buddies- the schools are still closed and will be again tomorrow.

Holly and I are doing the longer loop today so we're seeing a few things we didn't see yesterday, like this balanced precariously over the trail- the tree on the left is holding up the one on the right, but it has huge cracks in the base so we didn't hang about under it!

Well, will check in again when I'm here with cell service again if not before :)

What's in these trucks?

The gate at Saxon Woods is closed and laced with caution tape at the bottom of the hill. But in the parking lot at the top of the hill are all these refrigeration trucks with their engines running- but not a soul to be seen. Wonder what's being kept cold in them...?

Saxon Woods

It's all like this! And that's why we're just doing the short loop today ;)

Another from Saxon Woods

This tree has just split and fallen in three different directions!

At Saxon Woods...

... walking the dog, and it's pretty much like this all over, what a mess!

After-Hurricane Pizza Party...

... In the Guild Room :)

After the storm

We made it through the night and never lost power. No Internet and cell phone is spotty.

We're down at Jody's checking out the house - seems fine but no power. Trees and wires down all over in just the 1/2 mile ride here, the cleanup from this is gonna take a while!

This is the big sign on Playland Parkway.

Made it through :)

Phone is very spotty, not sure if my previous message made it to the blog coz I attached a picture.

We're fine, never lost power, but have no Internet. The rest of town is a mess! Jody's house is fine but trees and power lines down all over.

It was only a matter of time...

Home and church internet connections are down. Posting this using wifi tethering on my phone.

Power and TV still OK, but time for bed I suppose...

Sounds of Sandy

video

I know you can't really see anything in this video I shot a few minutes ago right outside the Parish Hall door, but just listen to the roar of the wind (and this is as the storm winds down)!

Sandy after dark

Just checked the boiler-room (still just some puddles) , and then did a quick walk around the block. We seem to be an island of light in a sea of darkness- Graham's and the bank are dark, as is most of Grace Church St and Milton Rd. Colin lost power earlier but seems to have it back for now.

The roads are covered in leaves and branches of all sizes, but other than a couple of big branches from the big pine outside Susan office, we seem to have faired pretty well so far :)

(Hope I haven't just jinxed us by posting this!)

An evening with Sandy

Not much new to report, we now have heavy, wind-driven rain and some seriously strong gusts, but apart from some water just starting to appear on the floor in the boiler-room, all is well. I shall have to keep a close eye on the situation in the boiler-room, but at the moment we still have power so the pumps should take care of that without a problem :)

Sandy update

So far it's getting very windy but we don't have as much rain as we feared. We still have all our utilities (fingers crossed!) but the worst is yet to come. Schools have already announced that they're closed again tomorrow so Crisp is happy :)

We don't have a lot of people in the building, as you may think from the parking lot, lots of people have just parked here as we're on quite high ground.

Hurricane Day

Don't know if we'll be able to get out later, so I've brought Holly for an early morning run in Rye Town Park :)

Starting to get pretty gusty, but no rain yet and 54F.

Anticipating Sandy

Just went for last outs with the dog and it's starting to get a little breezy.

Nothing too bad, and no rain yet, but Holly stood in the middle of the parking lot and sniffed the air for 3 or 4 minutes before peeing quickly and heading straight back inside. That and the fact that the cat ate all her food this evening and then curled up on our bed rather than going back out as she usually does gives me more pause than all the hype on the "news" shows!

So, off to bed and we'll see what the morning brings...stay tuned...

We are the hippest church :)

I've just left the curate listening to "The Joshua Tree" full blast on the church sound system!

More Storm Prep

Gutters are all done, I've built a small lean-to out of a pallet and a tarp to shelter the boiler-room genny from the rain, overhauled and tested the main and both auxiliary sump-pumps, and filled the back-up tanks with gas. That's enough for today, time to go walk the dog :)

Storm Prep

With all the hype about Hurricane Sandy bearing down on us I'm in full storm prep mode- the idea being that if I'm fully prepared nothing will happen :)

So even though this is supposed to be my day off I've already checked over and test started the generators and the chain saw, I'm half way through cleaning all the gutters (it's so much easier with a leaf blower!), and then I shall head out and fill my spare gas tanks. I shall hold off on things like taking down the hanging signs until we know a little more about the storm's path, but I'd much rather get the stuff that involves climbing ladders and going up on the roof out the way today while the weather's quite nice ;)

Saxon Woods Panorama

The new version of Android I have on my phone has a fun, new panorama feature with the camera, so here's a 180° view of the bridge where I take a picture every day for my other blog while I'm walking the dog :)

Nice fall sunshine...

....In the woods.

P.S. Forgot to mention - all the school buses have gone :)

Knocking on Heaven's Door ;)

I was watching the ascent of Felix Baumgartner's capsule on my phone as Jake and I drove home from the supermarket, and we got home in time to watch the last preparations and the jump live with Crisp. Free-fall from 24 miles up...

Astounding!

And now they have announced that he apparently reached mach 1.24, 833.9mph!

I know there will be lots of people who won't see the point in it, or think it was a waste of money, but I think it is wonderful when someone has the guts and the spirit of adventure to attempt something like this!

Well dressed man

Pardon my indulgence, but here are a few more pictures of Crisp all dressed up this morning :)

School Buses?

We've come to the woods after finishing the clean up from the fair to find the whole upper parking lot full of school buses! This is the view looking one way, but it's exactly the same looking the other.

There's no sign of any group of people who would need this many buses, and that, along with the fact that their engines are cold and that they're all from the White Plains Bus Company, leads me to believe they're being stored here. I hope this is not a long-term thing!

Off to his first Bar Mitzvah

He cleans up pretty nicely!

(and I still can't believe he's wearing my shoes!)

A chilly morning

It's the first morning we've dropped below freezing and we're setting up for my favourite day of the year (?!) - the nursery school fair.

Sunny Leaves

Today was a beautiful fall day, so I took my camera when I took Holly to the woods this afternoon to try and capture some of the gorgeous low sun on the leaves :)

Morning sun

My phone camera really doesn't do it justice, but this is one of those mornings when the early sun on the main window in the church is simply beautiful.

Amber & Holly

Amber is working at a school nearby (ish) doing yearbook pictures etc, so she's crashing at Kathy's tonight rather than driving all the way back to Philly.

Holly was very pleased she stopped in to say hi :)

Well blessed dog :)

One of the perks of living at the church is that Holly got blessed twice at our annual St. Francis Day blessing of the animals on Thursday :)

(Sasha got blessed later in private, when there weren't so many strange dogs around!)

Bread Machine

While looking for something else in our storage room the other day I came upon our old bread machine. I'd forgotten how nice it is when the whole apartment smells of rising dough :)

Timber!

A little present from the big storm yesterday on the lower trail at Saxon Woods. I don't think my pocket chainsaw is going to be much help ;)
