Gallifrey One!

Dad as Azal in the Daemons

Got some really cool news today- Dad is being flown to LA in a couple of weeks to be a guest at the Gallifrey One Doctor Who Convention! This year is a special one as it is the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, and though he's done tons of these cons in the UK he's never done one in the US before. The con is totally sold out, so even though CJ is desperate to go, even if we could get away (and could afford) to go to LA we couldn't get in, but it's still really cool :)

Here's their website (they haven't updated the guest list yet)-
and here's what they posted on Facebook-
"A new guest added today to our schedule: we are delighted to welcome Stephen Thorne to Gallifrey 2013. Thorne played three iconic characters in the classic series: the Time Lord engineer in "The Three Doctors," the venomous Azal in "The Daemons" and the later incarnation of Eldrad in "The Hand of Fear"; he's also appeared on audio and has made many appearances in the UK. We're delighted to welcome Stephen to Gallifrey 2013, with thanks to Tenth Planet Events and David Bickerstaff."

(It should be "the Time Lord Omega in the "The Three Doctors"" as someone on Facebook pointed out almost immediately)

Here's Dad's entry on the Doctor Who Wiki in case you're interested in learning more about the monsters he played :)

Onion breath

Crispy picked up this half an onion and pretended to take a bite ... I called him a wuss and took a real bite ... so he then had to take a real bite himself.

A brief pissing contest between generations that now means I'm not getting kissed for the rest of the evening ;)

King's Landing...

...made in Minecraft!!!

For all you Game of Thrones fans out there- this is amazing! More pics here.

Poor little doggy

Holly was a bit lame after yesterday's walk, favoring one of her back legs. I don't know if she pulled a muscle or sprained something slipping on one of the icy spots in the woods, but we gave her some of the anti-inflammatory pain-killer the vet gave us last time this happened, and after an hour or so she was much better. I think the London Broil we cooked for dinner helped take her mind off it too as she was sitting and hoping for a piece by the end of the meal!

Anyway, she seemed almost back to normal this morning, but to be on the safe side I decided to limit her walks for the next couple of days. So this afternoon, rather than head for Saxon Woods, we just did 2 circuits of Rye Town Park with no tennis-ball chasing- she was not pleased. For about an hour after we got home she sat and looked at me disapprovingly as if to say "you call that a walk???"

But she looks like she has forgiven me now :)

Snowy woods

And here are a few more from the woods- the 60mm macro lens opens up all the way to f/2.8 and lets you do some nice controlled depth-of-field shots :)

Dog on the path

I really like the depth in this one- it looks like one of those Instagram tilt-shift shots,
but it's  just a good lens from a low angle :)

Cold sunset through the trees

And the 60mm showing it's prowess as a great portrait lens
with my long-suffering canine subject :)

Macro snow

After I was finished clearing the snow off the sidewalks this morning the sun came out and was all glinty reflecting off the tiny ice crystals that made up this below-freezing snowfall. So I was inspired to grab my camera and my 60mm macro lens and my home-made flash diffusers and take a few shots around the church and then some more in the woods while out with the dog :)

The snow is like granulated sugar

The Star Magnolia in the columbarium is already in bud

Salt crystal from the landscaper's salt truck in the parking lot

Rhododendron bud

snapped off twig- about the thickness of a pencil lead

More snow crystals

Winter twig

A leaf that never made the jump

Crispy & Clover... Stew Leonards :)

Another snowfall cleared...

... using NO salt on the sidewalks- thanks to my power brush.

Better for the environment, the new sidewalks and the church budget :)

Out picking up Chinese food...

... In the snow. I know what I'm doing tomorrow morning.

A bit pathetic

This is CJ's "I've just come in out of the cold from a hard week at school so will you please make me a PBJ" face.

It worked (what can I tell you?... I'm a soft touch!)

Frozen stream

To show you how cold it is- Holly's stream (where she cools off in the summer) is frozen almost solid. No swimming today!

Wicked cold Wednesday

It's a bit chilly today,  15F, 7F with the windchill (that's minus 10C, or -14C with the windchill, for you modern types) but Holly's snug in her snazzy Ruffwear coat that I got for her a couple of years ago- it fits her perfectly but is stretchy enough that it doesn't impede her movement at all :)

Happy Birthday Danny Kaye

In honor of what would have been Danny Kaye's hundredth birthday Turner Classic Movies is doing a marathon of his movies- this evening I have enjoyed Walter Mitty, Hans Christian Anderson and am currently watching The Court Jester ("Get it?" "Got it" "Good!"). Later they're showing my favourite, Wonder Man ("a pint of Prospect Park"), but thanks to the DVR I don't have to stay up all night but can enjoy it tomorrow :)

Now I've got to go coz it's almost time for "The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!"

Christmas is officially over...

... taking down the lights from the tree in the parking lot ;)

F#&*ing Windows!

For various incredibly stupid reasons it has just taken me over an hour to install a USB mouse on an old laptop running Windows XP!

On the laptop next to it (running Linux) all I has to do was plug it in.

Favourite of the day

And this is my favourite picture from the woods today- the new lens and the polarizing filter do an awesome job- this is just how it came from the camera, no post jiggery-pockery at all :)

Brisk sunny woods

Took my camera with me to walk the dog today as it's the first really nice brisk (27F), clear, sunny day we've had in a while :)

Had the polarizing filter with me- it does an awesome job of lifting the blue skies-
this is without...

...and this is with :)
Ice crystals in the mud

Slightly filthy dog...

...but after she'd gone haring through the stream... bring back her tennis ball...

...and shaken herself dry she was cleaner :)

I've got my eye...

CJ's school is having a "Decades Day", and the 8th Grade are supposed to dress in styles from the CJ picked one of his favourite 80s movie characters- Doc Brown from Back to the Future :)

Taizé Chanting and Drumming video

If you have half an hour to spare check out the video of our cool Taizé chanting and drumming service from last Saturday. The video is not too interesting as it was so dark, but the audio came out pretty well :)

... and after :)

I love my snow-brush...

... it's perfect for this kind of snow/sleet/ice pellet mix :)

An evening with the Confirmation Class...

...banging drums and shaking tambourines in church- kinda cool :)

Here's a taste of what it sounded like (this is the last few minutes)-

And here are a few more pictues-

Colin's foot

Church with candles

Musicians and singers rehearsing

CJ & Paul

Tami introducing the service

Wonderful music and atmosphere!

... I win a game :)
