Prom Photographer

This is my carefully crafted lighting set up for the prom pictures for the kids from Jackie's school. All was going great until the fuses in all three lights blew at the same time :(

Thank God I had my off-camera flash cable in my bag so I was able to salvage the last few pictures that way!

Memorial Day

Had a fun day barbecuing over at Jody's with family for Memorial Day.

Holly came to enjoy the fun and was fabulous with the kids, tirelessly chasing every ball they threw for her (I didn't take her to the woods figuring the kids would tire her out- and I was right!).

Wow!

Can't believe I just dropped my son off at the movies for his first "date" :)

Lazing in the pool

Windy Night!

It was very windy last night and the big tree that's down across the trail must have been blown over then. It's just above the bridge I photograph every day for my other blog.

Cookie Monster belt buckle

I found this Cookie Monster belt buckle in a store closing sale yesterday and grabbed it for Colin. Jackie said I was silly and he would never wear it, but he went straight home and put it on :)

Shaving

As the weather has become quite hot and steamy I decided it was time for the beard to come off for the summer- but as I shaved it off last night I decided to have some fun :)

Track Meet

CJ actually had fun at the track meet this afternoon :)

He set a personal best in both the shot (19'3") and the 100m (16.8secs). He only ran the hundred because they said everyone had to do a running event (so all the field event kids chose it because it's the shortest), but he surprised himself by not coming last :)

Excellent Photo Day!

The "headshot" area of the studio
I had a fabulous day at the Photo Workshop today!

When I did the Night Photography evening classes a while back it was a little frustrating because some of the people in the class were absolute beginners who had bought high-end DSLRs but didn't know their ISO from their f-stop. This was a class of me and three professional photographers basically doing a master class (taught by another professional who has had his own successful studio for 25 years) on lighting and posing with some extra info on sales and business thrown in. In fact I was a little worried that I would be the one asking the dumb questions, but was happy to find that I comfortably held my own- all those books I've read and all the practice photographing everything I can has paid off :)
Looking towards the "low key" area
with the biggest softbox I've ever seen!

I t was great to be part of a small class taught by a working professional in a working studio. We worked through all sorts of poses and lighting situations- including prom pictures which will hopefully let me do a better job when I shoot the Fanwood Prom for Jackie at the end of the month :)

Unfortunately even though we had all brought our own gear there was so much to get through that for time we just ended up using his gear as it was already all set up for each situation, but it was fun to get to play with a Nikon D4 and a Canon 5D Mk II and some f2.8 70-200 lenses :) It does mean I don't have any of those shots, but I did grab a few crappy cell phone pictures of the studio etc.
The workshop corner from the "high key" section

So thanks to the PPA and our instructor Aaron Pepis of Pepis Studios for a great day- I learned a lot and can't wait to put it all to use- and I shall definitely sign up for the next time!

And we finished with some ambient+fill flash shots outside

Photo Lighting Workshop

Lunch break right now (at a Greek place for gyros), but I've learned a whole ton this morning! It's a small class (4) in a working studio with a great teacher :)

Day Out

Quite excited today for my day out today!

I'm going to spend the day at a photo studio in West Haverstraw at a photo lighting workshop (part of the PPAs "Super Monday" of workshops - should be fun :)

Happy Mother's Day!

Jackie's presents-
A little Crispy figurine we had made (it doesn't come out that well in the picture but we sent full face and profile pictures and they custom make the face), and Crispy made a book of coupons for hugs, doing dishes, moan-free visits to the supermarket etc.

The bridge in the woods

Playing with a new camera app on my phone (Cameringo), so here is an artsy picture of the bridge in the woods I photograph every day for my other blog :)

Pandemic!

First play of Pandemic - a very good co-operative game with a steep learning curve, but we picked it up fairly quickly (I think it helps that by now we're pretty "board game savvy").

We played the "introductory" game and won (yay!) - next time we'll go up a difficulty level and see how we do :)

With the Chapmans :)

It's (still) a tough job...

... but someone has to do it :)

Clammy legs

I'd forgotten how yucky it feels to walk around in cold, wet jeans. Oh, well, it'll be worth it in the end :)

Blue skies :)

I came out to walk the dog while I wait for my jeans to be dry enough to put on, what a beautiful sky!

501s, part 2

Now they hang out here for 2-3 hours until they're damp, and then I wear them dry to set the size.

The idea is that you buy them just a little big, then the hot water soak shrinks them 'til they're a little small on you, then as you wear them dry they stretch just enough to be a perfect fit. And this first cycle kind of sets a "memory" in the material- they'll stretch a little as you wear them but each hot wash will bring them back to your size :)

Now I've just got to go and scrub the blue stain off the sink before Jackie sees it ;)

Marinating jeans

Soaking a pair of shrink-to-fit Levi 501s in very hot water before I hang them outside to drip dry and then wear them damp for the rest of the day. A bit of a pain, but the old methods really are the best to give you a pair of custom fit jeans that will very soon become "old friends" :)
