Sleepover

And they are back from trick-or-treating and settled in to work their way through the Alien movies :)

All Hallow's Eve

Crisp and his buds off for the candy-begging part of the evening.

Another Halloween...

... another sleepover in the Undercroft :)

Right now they're playing computer games- they've graduated from the XBox (though they still play it sometimes), now they all bring laptops and we put one of them up on the big screen- and stocking up with pigs-in-blankets while one of their number goes trick-or-treating with his little sister. Later they will dress and head out for some trick-or-treating of their own, and then come back to settle in for a horror movie marathon :)

Forced rest?!?

In an effort to finally clear up this nagging limp Holly still has in her right, front wrist (the vet reminded me that that's the correct terminology- on the back paws it's an ankle, on the front it's a wrist) we went back to the vet yesterday. She gave Holly a full work-up and said the best thing to do is to rest her as completely as possible- this means not even walking round the block and only outside to relieve herself and then only on a leash. She's back on an anti-inflammatory and, to stop her going totally crazy without exercise, a mild sedative as well.

It's really tough because she doesn't understand, but hopefully the sedative will take the edge off, and once she shows some improvement we can gradually start with leash walks around the block again and work our way up from there.

Shaving the boy

The boy has picture day at school tomorrow, so (as he has not completely mastered the art of shaving yet) I offered to clean up his scraggly beard into a neater goatee.

He's standing in the bathroom, looking up at the ceiling as I scrape a blade across his neck and he starts quietly singing, "Pretty women...."

I'm very proud :)

Ankle Brace

Holly is still favoring one ankle a little so, in the hope of being able to take a walk in the woods without making it worse, I found a place on the interwebs that makes canine ankle braces :)

She's not crazy about it, but hopefully it'll mean she can run about the woods a bit instead of being limited to leash walks as she heals- but no tennis ball yet!

OK Winter...

... I'm ready for ya!

My new winter tires (the first set I've ever had) for the little Hyundai have arrived :)

It's still too warm out to put them on the car, but as soon as it gets cold enough to swap them in I'll post again with my thoughts...

Sad doggy

Poor Holly just doesn't understand why she hasn't been romping in the woods the last couple of days :(

She was limping a little, favoring her front, right paw... she does this occasionally, turns or sprains an ankle when she's chasing tennis balls with such abandon that she doesn't even notice. Usually we just take it easy for a couple of days and she's fine, but this time it was lingering a little so we went to the vet to make sure it wasn't anything more serious- which it isn't- so she's got the usual antiinflammatory and is on leash walks only for a few days.

She'll be fine, and it's for her own good, but how do I resist those eyes?

Doctor Who???

Can't quite put my finger on why (just had a long conversation with Crisp, trying to), but I'm just not feeling this season of Doctor Who.

I was very excited about Capaldi coming in, and I'd got used to Coleman, but so far (except for the brilliant "Listen") the whole thing just leaves me frustrated. It's not Capaldi's fault, I just feel like they don't really know what to do with him, and because of that I haven't been able to make any connection with him- it's like he's a badly written bit player who's kind of one dimensional.

I'll keep watching coz they've surprised me before- the first season of Smith made me a bit angry but ended up great, but even when it made me angry I bought into the character- but so far it's unfortunately getting to be Doctor who cares :(

A bit lopsided

Slightly chipmunk-cheeked selfie as I sit outside CVS while Jackie goes in to get my pain medication. We're on our way home from the dental surgeon where I just had a wisdom tooth and a molar extracted.

Fall in the woods

Took my camera with me into the woods today- I need to get back in the habit of taking more pictures for fun rather than jut when there's an event to photograph...

Anyhow, here are some of the results :)

I've photographed this old tree before, but it works nicely like this

Sun on the leaves

Autumnal trail

And of course, the dog

I always like her monochrome coloring against the woods

Time for a new tennis ball, methinks...

Vermont pictures

I finally got around to editing the last few pictures from our week in Vermont back in August and putting them together as an album... just click here or on the picture above to see it :)

The cabin we rented for the week was the Vermont Country Lodge near Springfield, VT. It was a wonderful place: quirky, private, comfortable and just the relaxing retreat we needed.

The cabin is at the end of an almost 3/4 mile dirt track, overlooking a pond. There is one other house at the top of the track, and another overlooking the pond from the other side, but there is a grassy knoll with a copse of trees on it in front of the cabin that completely blocks it and gives you total privacy. The cabin itself is well appointed in a slightly quixotic way with much of the owners own art on the walls and a wonderful mix of comfortable furniture. There was no cell phone reception, but the wifi was actually faster than at home (much to the boy's glee). The dog romped in the woods and across the fields and swam in the pond- and I blame her for the fact that I didn't catch any fish big enough to keep :)

All-in-all an almost perfect spot and a wonderful week- if I have any say we'll go back there again!
