Curious Incident

We went to see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time last night (our Christmas present from my parents- thanks!) on Broadway.

We had a fabulous evening- we drove in a little early (isn't it crazy that with 3 of us going it's cheaper to drive and park in the garage 30 feet from the theater than take the train in?) and had a great dinner at the Mean Fiddler across the street before wandering around Times Square for a while, looking at all the people, the lights and the preparations for tonight's ball-drop.

The show was great- an amazingly cleverly staged detective mystery seen through the mind of a 15 year old boy. I won't go into the plot in case you want to read the book or go see the show, but will just say that you should definitely do either or both!

Crisp loved it- the only thing that got him riled was when the audience giggled at inappropriate moments. It's never explicitly mentioned, but it's pretty obvious that the lead character is high-functioning aspergers and the actors are wonderful and play it completely straight and not for laughs at all, but a couple of times there were nervous titters from people in the audience who were obviously made uncomfortable by some of his reactions to things.

All-in-all a wonderful evening and a great way to end the year on a high note- we had a blast- thanks Mum & Dad!

Six years with a dog

I realized on the way to the woods to walk Holly this afternoon that is is six years since the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's in 2008 when we adopted her.

She's been part of the family ever since and I can't imagine life without her. We have walked many thousands of miles together (we average about 3 a day), and she guards us from every creak in the hallway or leaf that blows against the window ;)

Anyhow, in celebration of her adopt-iversary, here are a few of my favorite pictures of her from the last year :)

All is prepared

Just locked up after finishing the last piece of prep (a sound check with the guitarist for Silent Night- Blue Peter you have a lot to answer for!*), the church is all set, the presents are all wrapped, and Jackie has made a huge pot of delicious soup :)

I think we're ready...

* BBC kid's show Blue Peter used to do 2 things every year that I will always remember- they made an Advent crown out of coat hangers, and they told the apocryphal story of the writing of Silent Night

Christmas church :)

Forgot to post this yesterday (long day and I was tired), but click here to see a Facebook album of pictures of how beautiful the church looks :)

Oh no...

Scratchy throat...cough...feeling kind of chilled and headachy... oh crap!

Well, Jackie had it and Crisp is still getting over it, so I suppose it was inevitable :(

Hopefully my iron constitution and about 3 million mg of vitamin C will let me fight it off :)

Super Sasha

Jackie had a little yarn left over from her latest project, so she knitted Sasha a little cape.

I don't think Sasha is showing the correct amount of gratitude.

Miles (literally) of cable!

We are installing a new, state-of-the-art phone and internet distribution system throughout the church buildings, and the wiring team has been working late into the night the last few days (I've just locked up after them as they left tonight).

So far they've run about 2.85 miles of cable- and they're probably about 3/4 done. This is where all the cables end up, in the nursery where they will build a new cabinet to house all the new high-tech gear.
