Sunny, snowy woods

Brisk and cold, 18F, but the brief thaw we had melted the top layer of snow and now it's refrozen and sparkles beautifully in the sunshine :)

Snow dog!

It's only 13F and there's a gusty wind taking the windchill well into the negative numbers, but Holly doesn't care. She has her Ruffwear coat, Musher's Wax on her feet, and a tennis ball to chase :)

And it gets colder!

We've made it into the negative even without the windchill. And this is now the sun is up!

Lent: day 1 with the straight razor

No blood! I shaved both cheeks with it and did not cut myself :)

So I decided to quit while I'm ahead and stop there and finish up with my usual cheap twin-blade. I'll do a little more tomorrow...

Not seen in many months!

Two clean shaven Thorne men :)

Crisp decided it was time he cleaned himself up, and I am getting ready for my chosen Lenten discipline this year... teaching myself to shave with this-

I have always wanted to learn how to shave with a cut-throat, and I found a website with a video tutorial that recommends that you do it a little at a time- start with the flat areas on your cheeks, then the straight bits on your throat, then work up to the curvy bits on your chin and finally the area under your nose and around your mouth. You do a little area each day and then finish shaving your usual way (my cheap razors from Dollar Shave Club), then the next day you do the same area again and a little more, and so on... The whole process should take about a month, so I figured it would be a great, contemplative thing to do for Lent (with a little prayer not to slice my face to ribbons each day!).

The badger shave brush I've had for ages and the razor I got cheaply on Amazon- it uses disposable blades and is said to be the best way to learn. If I take to it I will get myself a proper one as an Easter present- but it can be quite involved and pricey as a good one isn't cheap, and then you need a sharpening stone and a strop etc. So we'll see in 40(ish) days :)

Clean shaven!

Crisp has decided to clean up his act, so he's been going through his clothes and he asked me to help him shave off his scraggly beard :)

Cold Selfie!

It is wicked cold today, 10F right now, but at least the wind has died down a bit.

But thanks to the fleece hood-and-face-mask Jackie got me for Christmas (and Holly's coat) we're still out here to enjoy it :)

CCM Motors for the win

My car wouldn't start this morning, dead battery, it turned over a couple of times and then nothing... not really surprising considering it's so cold. I put my charger on it for half an hour and tried again and it started right up. I hadn't left my lights on or anything so I decided to take it down to my favorite garage to have them check the battery as I really didn't want to be stranded somewhere like the woods with dog.

They tested it and their diagnostic computer said the battery needed to be replaced. They looked at the installation date marked on it (May 2013) and asked me where I'd got it, I told them it must have come from them as I don't take the car anywhere else, and they said it should be under warranty then and so they put in a new one for nothing. No receipt necessary, no fuss, just a new battery and off I went.

I love an honest business!

It's a tad chilly out tonight...

(for you modern European types, that's -17C, and feels like -34C when you factor in the wind!)

Chilly woods

Beautiful but very cold in the woods today, sunny and 11F with a windchill of -12F!

Holly doesn't mind (snug in her coat) as long as we keep moving :)

... who really does not appreciate all the snow outside! She has been spending an awful lot of time in recent days staring angrily out of the windows or at the cat flap, but here is caught in a moment of relaxitude ;)

Putting the boy to work

There were a few problems with our new snow removal guy today, mostly timing and inexperience I think, but one thing that threw him for a loop was this big pile of snow that the town plows pushed over the sidewalk at the bottom of Rectory St.

He couldn't get anywhere attacking it with a snowblower so he told me I'd need to call another landscaper with a backhoe to take care of it. I told him he just needed 2 guys with shovels and an ice chipper.

By 3 o'clock it had not been touched so I asked Crisp if he wanted to make a few bucks and the two of us took care of it in less than an hour. I'm going to pay Crisp handsomely and take the money off the snow guy's bill when it comes in :)

Ice and snow

This is as close as I can get with the dog to the bridge where we take our daily picture. There is a skin of ice on top of the snow that is just not strong enough to support Holly's weight. It's fine for me with my snowshoes and heavy boots, but she breaks through with every step and then has the sharp icy edges of the holes she's made to deal with.

So we've just walked along the dirt road at the bottom (which has been roughly plowed as far as here coz of the sewage pumping station) and we'll walk back the same way.

My new favourite spectator sport...

...watching other people shovel snow from inside with a nice hot cup of coffee in my  hand :)

(I have just made a pot for the guys so they can come in and warm up when they're done)

Happy snow day!

Another dumping of snow, but it's the nasty ice pellets that are falling now that are the real PITA!
