Ugly shoes

I just bought a very ugly pair of sneakers- but boy are they comfortable!

I needed something cheap and cheerful but with very good arch support to help with my plantar fasciitis so I went to Modells look around. After trying on lots of different sneakers I ended up with these... on sale- probably because they're so ugly :)

Boiler room cleanup

Just spent a happy morning cleaning 20 years of accumulated junk out of the boiler room in preparation for the replacement of the stream boiler next week. I wish I'd taken a before picture, but trust me, it's not looked this good in many years!

Very tired dog!

This is why we didn't go to the woods today... After a full day of running around the pool and swimming Holly is totally exhausted :)

Summer reading...

...you're doing it right :)

Holly swimming!

We finally worked out the only way to get Holly fully into the pool was to have her run and jump in with me. She did it yesterday and again today- but it's mostly worth sharing this video for the complete look of "are you crazy" on Violet's face as she runs alongside :)

A new place to read...

Now the small children have gone, the reader has moved to a new spot :)

"The Martian"

While we've all been outside this afternoon enjoying the pool (pictures to follow), Crisp was finally persuaded to make a start on one of his summer reading books, Andy Weir's The Martian.

I read it first and finished it in 3 days, and predicted he would enjoy it too... he's devouring it and is already 120 pages in with no pause in sight :)

Ah, the joys of having a teenager...

Crisp has gone off with his (older) cousins to a friend's house just up the highway to play their D&D game. The last thing I told him when he left was that he needed to call or text me to say they'd arrived safely, and of course, like every teenager (including me) before him, he forgot. We couldn't raise him on his cell, and then couldn't get hold of any of the cousins either. We tried messaging on Facebook, and then, after an hour, I got in the car and drove over there.

Of course they were all there and fine, but the house is in a total cell dead-zone (though there is a land-line in the house he could have used to call me).

Oh well, I've done my duty and thoroughly embarrassed my son in front of his friends... hopefully he will learn from this and not forget to call me again :)

One of the few today :)

Peel me a grape, sweetheart!

I was in the alley down the side of the parish hall this morning, clearing a blocked gutter, and noticed our mostly ignored, and now slightly tumbledown, grape arbor is covered in grapes! There have never been this many before- if the birds don't get them all first we might actually have a bumper harvest :)

The Dread Pirate Roberts

Dipper to his friends :)

Crickets by mail!

We got a little  bored with going to the pet store every three or four days to buy 15 or 20 crickets to feed Crisp's Leopard Gecko (who now has a name- Dread Pirate Roberts, DPR or DiPpeR for short). So after a little research I found that I can order 100 to be automatically delivered every 2 weeks over the internet (of course!). He (or she, we're still not sure) eats 4 or 5 a day so that should be just about right, and the price (about $13 with shipping) is just about the same as we were paying at the pet store.

Of course they have to live somewhere, so we ordered a larger version of the cricket pen we initially got,  and I placed an initial test order for the crickets. The pen arrived yesterday and the crickets arrived this morning via the mailman.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but they arrived in a cardboard tube with metal ends with hundreds of little tiny holes in each end, and a section of egg carton to crawl about on. I opened it very carefully outside (!) and gingerly shook them out into the pre-prepared pen and was very happy to find that it looks like they all survived the trip.

They must be hungry as they fell on the food and hydro-gel; crickets drown easily so you give them water as a gel that they can eat and get hydrated from, but not drown in- that's the yellow, globby stuff, the orange blocks are the food. They get special food that is calcium-rich which is called "gut-loading" which allows you to feed more calcium to the Gecko (they also get dusted in a special vitamin-rich powder right before they are fed to him).

Now we just need to see if they will live for the full two weeks. Well, some of them will Gecko poo within a couple of days, but I need the lucky ones to live as long as possible...

One more day...

...of leash walking, just to be sure.

Holly is pretty much back to normal, and last night's meeting with the Heffernan's dogs went as if they'd never been apart.

So tomorrow will be back to the woods and the start of housesitting the dogs and the pool :)

Back on the leash :(

Holly came home from Monday's walk limping a bit again. She's just too obsessed with her tennis ball in the woods as she throws herself after it, I may have to just limit it's use.

Yesterday we just did a short walk on the leash and she's already much better, so another short walk around the block today and then later she's off to get reacquainted with Violet and Sparrow, so that'll be enough for today!

I'm purposely being over-careful as I want her 100% healthy when we go to Vermont at the end of August ;)

Happy 4th :)

Just took a few pictures today (busy running around), but the usual FaceBook album can be found here.

Perks :)

Perks of having a kid who works at a high-end "snack bar"- he comes home with treats :)

Crispian Joshua...

...British Citizen :)

Just got a knock at the door from the DHL man with two envelopes. One was all my original documents back, the other was Crisp's new British Passport!

I only sent everything off on June 22nd, so that's an amazing 11 day turnaround, and very appropriate to be delivered the day before the 4th of July ;)

So he is now officially dual nationality :)

Playing with lasers

Ruaraidh is doing a "Star Spangled Organ Recital" on Sunday afternoon and I'm providing the lightshow with some lasers and chase lights I can control or set to go in time with the music. He was practicing this morning so I took the chance to play with the lights and rehearse a bit myself- click here or on the picture above to see the video (and please, no bitching about the vertical video!). It looks much better in person (and the organ sounds much better too- my phone does not reproduce it well), but it works very nicely. :)

Don't tell everyone though, coz I want this to be a bit of a surprise, and definitely don't mention the smoke machine ;)

Report Card

Super proud of Crisp today! His report card just came in the mail... he had a couple of hiccups during the year, but finished strong with a final average of 91.63, and he got a 95 in the English Regents :)

Crisp's new little friend

Meet Crisp's new Leopard Gecko. He/she doesn't have a name yet, and we don't know it's gender, but it's pretty cute. We're reusing his old gerbil cage, he bought all the stuff for the tank (heating pad, hides etc.) with his wages, and I bought him the lizard :)

Getting used to the warm hide

Coming out to say hi

Checking out the new neighborhood

"Ooh, mealworms? Don't mind if I do!"

After he munched down 4 mealworms we put in a cricket in in case he was still hungry... once he spotted it he stalked it and just before he pounced he wagged his tail just like a cat about to pounce on a bird. I think he's pretty happy here so far :)

More Google Photos fan-boy-ness

I know I have posted this set of photos from Saxon Woods before, I just love the way Google Photos packages them so nicely, click on the link to see...
