The next brief they were given was to take a picture to make a graphic promoting not texting and driving- and these will be entered into a competition the local paper is running and there's a $50 prize. Here is Crisp's original picture:
And here is his final piece, with some editing of the picture, text added, and the the screen of the phone "broken":
I think he shows some real talent for this- he could have a future in advertising!
Holly somehow managed to gash her ear on our walk this afternoon, and came home covered in blood (ears always bleed a lot!). We cleaned her up and disinfected the wound but she kept knocking it and starting it bleeding again, so we fashioned her a very fetching bonnet from kitchen paper and an old stocking to keep it covered- just for a few hours until the bleeding stops properly.
She is a little embarrassed, but I think she'll be OK :)

I spent some time today moving a few electronics around. So now, while Crisp and his pals are in the undercroft playing the Xbox and/or their D&D game there, we can play our own games here :)
Jackie is playing Super Mario on the Wii in the living room and I'm playing Portal on the Xbox in my den (I realized the other day that I never finished Portal 2, so I decided to go back and play them both from the beginning... I'd forgotten how good they are!).

I worked with him on a Radio 4 Afternoon Theatre adaptation of Old Mali and the Boy in 1975 when I was 11. It was a long time ago, but I remember how generous and patient he was with an inexperienced youngster.
I must remember to ask my Dad if he still has the reel-to-reel recording of it and if there is any way he could get it transferred to CD and send me a copy...

This was Crisp's grand entrance to his birthday party- unfortunately the camera angle doesn't show it properly, but he comes out from behind the curtain through a cloud of smoke and lasers to the strains of Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" played on a banjo. I love this kid!

...and happy me.
Back in the woods after a week off to let Holly get over a sprain. We're just doing the short loop (and no tennis ball!), but you can tell from the look on her face how much she's missed this- and so have I :)
We'll take it very carefully and I won't bring the tennis ball back out 'til I'm sure she's fully recovered, but we needed this!

And the edited version...
Not bad considering he's just shooting in jpg (he has been told not to shoot in RAW as the school computers can't handle it!). I think he's done a very nice job with this one :)

The above is an animated gif that Crisp put together of one of the hallways at his school along with pictures of my eye that he had taken and manipulated. Kinda cool :)
And today I spent a wonderful hour in the woods with my son. He had been given an assignment in his digital photography class to take a "narrative" picture that could be used as a starting point for a creative writing project, so he wanted to take a picture of Holly looking wistfully at the little, tumble-down stone house about 1 1/4 miles along the upper trail. We had a lovely walk, chatting about all sorts of things and then I got Holly to pose as he wanted while he composed and took some pictures (I will post the one he finally chooses once he has made his decision and edited it).
A walk with my son and my dog, good conversation, and getting to help and advise him with his growing enthusiasm for photography- I'd call that a win in every way!

Holly was fine after our walk in the woods yesterday, but later that afternoon the fire alarm went off and she went crazy barking at the siren and strobe light in our apartment, and I think she must have pulled or twisted something then because she was limping and holding one front leg off the ground last night.
She is much better already today, but to be on the safe side I'm going to limit her to leash walks for a few days.
As you can tell from her face she's not happy, but this approach has worked well in the past as the quickest way to get her back to health and the woods :)
