First time behind the wheel

I'm at work for a taize service this afternoon, so Jackie has taken Crisp to the Playland parking lot for her first driving lesson.

She just texted me this picture with the caption "we just drove 100 feet" :)

NY Learners Permit...

... achievement unlocked :)

No thanks to the DMV website that doesn't tell you that they don't do the written tests in White Plains- however the people at the Yonkers DMV were lovely :)

Muddy and happy :)

Crisp has a new hobby, she's embracing her feminine side and has taken up airsoft (think paintball but with BB guns) with one of her friends ;)

They went up with a whole gang of friends the other weekend, and Jackie took them back up to the same airsoft area about an hour upstate today and just sent me this picture of them at the end of the day.

While I'm not crazy about the guns, apparently the people who do this are all very friendly, and anything that gets her running about in the fresh air for a full 7 hours can't be all bad ;)

Welcome...

In our continuing effort to brighten up the place, new nursery school signs on the glass doors upstairs and down :)

#resist

Walking the dog in my pink pussy hat and listening to the World Service reporting the end of the world as we know it.

We shall overcome.

Pussy hat

Thanks to Dorothée, I now have my very own pink pussy hat to wear in honor of the morally reprehensible scumbag being sworn in as president tomorrow and in support of the women marching on Saturday :)

The Friday Gang

Can I just say (though I'm pretty sure I've said it before) how grateful I am for this little group of friends who gather here every Friday night. They are an odd bunch with myriad different interests, and there are some other members who drift in and out, but the core group comes here after school almost every Friday night to hang, watch YouTube videos, and play video games- though they usually end up playing board games (current favorites are Catan and Betrayal at House on the Hill). I just put some sodas in the little cube fridge and some chips in there for them, and then throw them a pizza later in the evening. They look out for each other, have fun together and we know where they are!

What a great bunch of kids they are :)

Shame on you BBC!

I just watched this "documentary" on the BBC iPlayer, Transgender Kids: Who Knows Best, and frankly I'm appalled!

I had read about this on the Grauniad website, and had seen some other press that there was some controversy that the program had not been allowed to be viewed by those in opposition to Zucker's ideas before it was aired, so I wanted to see it for myself.

I have been championing the BBC in the current atmosphere of "fake news" and Trumps ridiculous Twittering and the farcical entertainment that passes for "news" coverage in this country- but this has just shot all that down. The tone, slant, images, editing, in fact pretty much everything about this crap is biased, sensationalist and awful. There is an attempt to show both sides of the argument, but it's clearly there just to show you that the producers are being "fair and balanced" (read that in a sarcastic voice). It's obvious which side the producers are on.

Shame, shame on you John Conroy and "BBC Two's award-winning This World"!

New Year, New Battery

So my car has been a little hesitant to turn over the last couple of mornings (not surprising considering how cold it has been); it has always started, but as it has done this before I decided to take it in to my mechanic to check it out before it left me stranded- and I'm glad I did.

Turns out the battery is almost dead- it shows an 80% charge but 25% health and low cranking amps- so they replaced it for free under warranty :) as it was new on January 5 last year- but that was a warranty replacement for a battery that was replaced on Feb 16, 2015, also under warranty for a battery I bought in May 2013.

For some reason this car just seems to eat batteries- this'll be the 5th battery in 4 years!

My mechanic asked if I wanted to try another brand- but recommended I didn't as if I did I'd lose the warranty- so I've stuck with the same as I haven't had to pay for one since the original replacement in 2013. Wonder how long this one will last...?

Doofenshmirtz :)

This could be awesome!

This morning New York's Governer, Andrew Cuomo, proposed free college tuition for New York residents going to SUNY schools whose families make less than $125,000...

If it passes it would be phased in over 3 years starting this fall- and it looks like we would qualify from the beginning!

Here is more from npr, the Washington Post and the Buffalo News.

I suspect this news will lead to a big increase in applications to all the schools in the SUNY system in the next few weeks (the regular application deadline is March 1), you can bet we're very glad we went early action!!!

Go Panthers :)
